Songs of My Life....

Ending my day as I usually do, with a little reading catching up on the days news and, listening to Apple Music’s selected music for me. The song “Get Together”came on. I’ve said the best music has the ability to take you someplace in your life. This is one of those songs.

“Get Together” was originally included in the group’s 1967 debut album “The Youngbloods.” The song stalled out and was re-released in 1969 as “The Youngblood’s” only Top 40 on Billboard Hot 100—peaking at No. 5.

I was working at the Record Shop at Park Fair in 1967 and until entering the Army. I remember spinning the vinyl copy continuously as one of my favorite songs. “Get Together” predated the release of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What’s It Worth” which remains my lifetime favorite song.

Both songs appeal for peace and brotherhood, presenting the polarity of love versus fear, and the choice to be made between them. The songs were particularly fitting during the Vietnam war years. Sadly they both have application in today’s world.

Take a few minutes and reflect on songs recorded over 56 years ago. A lot has changed in my lifetime but two things remain constant 1) music is the soundtrack of our lives and 2) we’ve learned little from our past.
